Working on behalf of Battersea Power Station Dev Co, we delivered one of Europe’s largest anchoring projects at the time and one of our first projects using Single Bore Multiple Anchors.

With limited ground investigation information and variable clay depth, we ensured our pile designer was site-based, enabling real-time decisions on pile design and pile toe depths confirmed without delay. To reduce cost and improve project efficiency, our team worked with Buro Happold to revise the design, installing fewer ‘wet’ piles and replacing them with a larger number of dry piles.
With innovation being a key success factor for the project, we utilised the ‘Superlatch’ cage splicing system to eliminate manual handling risks and used BIM to resolve clashes between anchor positions and shear walls or columns in a constrained basement area. We also developed bespoke sealing methods to manage high water pressures during anchor installation.
Environmental protection was also embedded throughout the project aligning with our commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment, outlined in Balfour Beatty’s sustainability strategy. This showcases our ability to deliver sustainable ground engineering solutions even in complex urban environments.
