Sixty London at 60 Holborn Viaduct, London

Drawing on our extensive piling experience we successfully re-used 111 existing piles on the site of a former office building to provide a sustainable and cost effective solution for the construction of a new commercial and retail development.

Contracted by Capita Symonds, we worked with Ramboll to design and implement a solution that enabled re-use of the 111 existing piles, installing only 73 new piles to support the construction of a new 11-storey state-of-the-art office building which is occupied, by world leading brand, Amazon.

Our testing and analysis team worked closely with the project team on site, inspecting and testing a proportion of the existing piles at key stages throughout the pre-construction and construction phases.

We tested the load capacity and integrity of the concrete by coring vertically down inside the existing piles and using a digital camera to inspect inside.

This method of re-using piles requires substantially less concrete and minimises the construction footprint by reducing energy consumption and the number of deliveries to site. Re-using piles also prevents conflicts between old and new piles at several grid locations and avoids worsening ground conditions that would restrict future redevelopment of the site.
