Wallend substation

Using UK-sourced Syntech biofuel to power the site, we saved 9 tonnes of carbon, reducing emissions for a cleaner, safer environment.

In line with the Balfour Beatty Group sustainability commitment to reduce scope 1 emissions, we continue to explore innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact when powering our existing fleet of piling rigs.

At our Wallend substation project, we embraced new available technology and operated our entire fleet using Syntech – a biofuel derived exclusively from waste oils. Sourced sustainably within the UK and produced and delivered through a carbon-neutral process, Syntech offered a locally available, ethical alternative to HVO.

Over the 12-week duration of the project, we achieved a carbon saving of 9 tonnes compared to conventional diesel use. In addition, we significantly reduced tailpipe exhaust emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier working environment.
